Video: DNA, the Molecule of Heredity

Description

Deoxyribonucleic Acid – You know, the word that everyone likes to say. The blueprint of all living organism that controls every trait that an organism expresses. It makes you who you are, because it is the foundation of who you are. In this lecture, I talk about the structure of DNA. It is a polymer that is made up of subunits called nucleotides. DNA controls our traits through the production of protein and these proteins are responsible for all functions of life.

Lastly, I talk about DNA replication, because in order for cells to go through mitosis or meiosis, DNA replication has to happen. DNA polymerase is an essential enzyme in this process, and I end the lecture by talking about how DNA polymerase does what it does. Enjoy!

This is part Chapter 11 in the textbook Biology: The Dynamics of Life, which is the chapter on DNA and Genes.

  1. Sorry about that. There were a few issues with the transfer to the new server. Working on re-uploading the videos now.

  3. Hi Leslie,
First, and most importantly… I LOVE you. 😀 I am a straight A’s 4th year psychology student – hoping to go to grad school next year. I am currently 4 weeks into a course called “Biological Basis of Behavior” and you have quite literally saved my GPA from suffering a severe blow. Sadly, my professor is dreadfully unenthusiastic and and dry about the subject and I was feeling like I had to teach myself the entire course just to get through it. I have watched every single one of your videos on the nervous system, (and some others too), and thanks to you I now have MUCH better understanding of my course material. I have read my textbook closely, but you have clarified so many things for me with your simple way of explaining things and your visual demonstrations. Sorry to gush like this, but I really am SO incredibly grateful to you.
    Thank you. 🙂
    Carol

  4. LOL, thanks for your love Carol 😀

So glad to hear that the videos have helped you. Comments like that motivate me to continue doing what I’m doing. Stay tuned for more, because I have lots more coming. We’re working behind the scenes to make Interactive Biology even better.

    All the best!

  5. I am not able to get this video to start. I think I have watched almost every video you have made. Thank you.

  6. Hiya 😀
First of all I have to say… awesome videos!! Your enthusiasm actually makes biology more interesting than when my teachers teach it at school :SS but yeah, thanks so much for all the time and effort you put into making them, its honestly very kind and helpful of you 😀

Just one thing, for some reason I can’t seem to play any of the genes related videos, any ideas why? It might just be my laptop being annoying, it does that alot xD

Thank you again for your great website 😀

  7. Hi Aliyah,

So glad that you are enjoying the content.

Yes, the gener videos are missing. Had some technical issues. When I get a chance, I will have to try to go through and retrieve them, but I’m not sure when that will happen.

    All the best!

  9. Hi Leslie,
I have enjoyed your presentations, I wish my lectures would be a little more enthusiastic about their teaching , you should come to Australia and teach them how it is done ! I am not able to access the DNA videos. Are these still not working?
    thanks,

  10. So, it appears that the DNA video has been deleted. Sooo many have asked for it, but its still not available. So sad…too bad. Our lost!
