Kinetoplast

/kəˈnetəˌplast/

Noun, pl. kinetoplasts

1. A network of circular DNA (called kDNA) inside a large mitochondrion that contains many copies of the mitochondrial genome. The most common kinetoplast structure is that of a disk, but has been observed in other arrangements. Kinetoplasts are only found in protozoa of the class Kinetoplastida. The variation in the structures of kinetoplasts may reflect phylogenic relationships between Kinetoplastids. Kinetoplasts are usually adjacent to the organisms’ flagellar basal body leading to the thought that they are tightly bound to the cytoskeleton. (wikipedia.org)

2. A disk-shaped mass of circular DNA inside a large mitochondrion, found specifically in protozoa of the class Kinetoplastea – (kinetoplastids). (wiktionary.org)

3. Mass of mitochondrial dna, usually adjacent to the flagellar basal body, in flagellate protozoa. (biology-online.org)

4. A mass of mitochondrial DNA lying close to the nucleus in some flagellate protozoa. (Google Dictionary)
