072 The Four Types Of Cellular Adaptations

As cells get exposed to an injurious agent, these cells then try to adapt such that an injury would be prevented.

Watch and learn what these adaptations are in this video. More to come on the details of each.

Enjoy!

Transcript of Today’s Episode

Hello and welcome to another episode of Interactive Biology TV where we’re making Biology fun. My name is Leslie Samuel, and in this episode, I’m going to be talking about the four types of cellular adaptations.

Two videos ago, I answered the question, “What is a disease?” And, in the last episode, what I spoke about were the “Five Causes of Disease.” The first cause, the number one cause of disease was adaptation, and what I said was that an adaptation is a cellular reaction to prevent injury. So, there’s an injurious agent in the environment of the cell, and the cell reacts in a way to prevent injury.

You can go back and check out those videos, but in this video, what I want to talk about is the first cause of disease which is an adaptation. So, what we’re going to do is we’re going to talk about the four types of adaptations.

Adaptation number one is atrophy. Atrophy is when the cell decreases its functional part. The cell is basically reducing its size by decreasing its functional parts. That’s number one.

Number two is hypertrophy. That is when the individual cells increase in size, and that of course, is going to cause the tissue to increase in size.

Then, there’s hyperplasia. Hyperplasia is when we have more cells being formed. So, the cells are replicating, and as a result of that, the tissue is increasing in size.

With hypertrophy, we have the tissue increasing in size because the individual cells are increasing in size. In hyperplasia, we have the tissue increasing in size because we’re getting more cells, which make sense.

Then, the last type of adaptation will be metaplasia. And, that is when we have one tissue type that’s replaced by another tissue type. So, these are the four types of adaptations.

I’m going to go into more detail about those adaptations in later videos, but for this video, all I want you to be able to do is remember those four adaptations.

    1.  Atrophy.
    2. Hypertrophy.
    3. Hyperplasia.
    4. Metaplasia.

And, you can say it with me. Let’s say it together.

Number one is atrophy, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, and metaplasia. We can kind of say it together. We can almost dance to it. it’s that simple. So, atrophy, hypertrophy, hyperplasia, and metaplasia.

In the next video, we’re going to go into detail about atrophy, and we’re going to continue from there.

That’s it for this video.

If you want more videos like this, and more resources to help make Biology fun, I invite you to visit the website at Interactive-Biology.com.

That’s it for this video, and I’ll see you in the next one.

  1. Thank youuuuuuuuuuu ! I like your way for explanation and I hope the next video will be very soon because I don’t have patience to wait .

  2. Hi Leslie! I just wanted to let you know that Ive watched every single one of your videos and you’ve helped me and my group of friends make it through this first year of Anatomy and Physiology. We are a first year Nursing group in MB Canada. Your videos make everything so easy to understand and we truly believe that you are a god send! From the bottom of our hearts we thank you for your time and patience and all your hard work we know it must take to make these!! I recieved your email about having a videographer edit your work now.. I must say that we love the way that you made your videos.. it felt like you were a real person explaining it to us… but this new video is pretty great too! Either way we will continue to watch your videos! Again, thank you so much!
    Sincerely,
-Jessica & her first year Nursing friends!

  3. Wow! Awesome, i love your the way you make everything look so much fun. Learning doesn’t have to be intense/terrifying before understanding takes place. I also love the song “Atrophy! Hypertrophy! Hyperplasia! and Metaplasia!” Lol…

But please try to add some slight animations to illustrate your definitions/explanations like you used to do in other videos e.g. action potential and the rest.

    Thanks!

  4. It’s always a pleasure to watch your video, Leslie. I’ll use it for my gym lesson in Italy. I’m looking forward to watching the next videos. Thank’s a lot.

  5. Leslie,

You asked for comments so here they are:

    1. There is little to no background “noise”. Voice modulation is still clear and no more sounding like there are two tin cans with string attached and pulled taut.

    2. Lighting is still very good

    3. As always, the explanations and descriptions create the intended mental pictures of the subject matter.

    4. Difficult concepts are broken down in a more simplistic manner so that the students can grasp those integral concepts.
    5. No matter how the information was presented in the past, is now and possibly in the future, it is YOU and your passion for learning that makes these episodes so successful.

I have shown the majority of your videos to students in my Medical Terminology and Anatomy & Physiology classes(next will be my Medical Assisting students)and I ALWAYS provide, on their Prospectus, the Interactive Biology’s web address.

    Thank you so much,
    Renee’ E Neldon, CMA (AAMA)

  6. Love thiiiiis 🙂 totally sharing this series 🙂
    Going back to the beginning.

    -Rochelle.

  7. I like it, over all the slides or pictures you have on this one.
I don’t think is necessary the repetition.
Your style is direct and simply that’s why I wacth your videos.
    Thanks again!

  8. Dear Leslie
Your video was fantastic. There is nothing to comment. Your presentation skills are really good. Thank You.

  9. amazing video man i never saw something like that before .. easy and simple one
thank you so much waiting of the new video .. cheers

  10. Well Jessica, that’s just great to hear. I’m glad to know that the videos are helping you guys. That’s awesome. Also good to know that you are enjoying the format of the videos. I have a lot of plans for more videos that I want to get done, so stay tuned.

    All the best!

  11. Thanks for the detailed feedback Renee. Actually, there was an issue with the digital recorder I used for recording the sound in this video and the background noise was significantly higher than it should be. The next video should be even more clear.

Also, thanks for sharing the videos with your students. Glad it’s able to help them.

    All the best!

  12. Thanks for the feedback Ceci. This video was definitely a very simple introduction to the concept of cellular adaptations. Will be getting more detailed in the near future.

  13. Hi Leslie,
Your videos are helping me a lot they are a lot easier to understand and i love the way you present them i can tell you love your job. So thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us it is much appreciated.

    Cheers

    Pauline

  14. Thank you so much . I really love your job , and I will be more thankful if I watch the next one as soon as possible because I really need these videos .

  15. Hey Leslie!

I think your video was excellent! The way you present things is very original and the fact that it is *you* presenting them, makes it special. Some videos are pure animations and I think because you make use of both presentation and animation, your videos are more fun to watch.

I had always wondered about these terms, but never got around to remembering them as easily as you made it.

Some animation to explain each of the adaptations would have been more powerful.

    Keep up the good work.

There is so much to learn and I truly enjoy your videos.

    Cheers

  16. Hey Leslie!

I do wish to suggest that your older ways of presenting were better, in the sense that you had a proper diagrams and pictures to explain your topic.

This format seems to be missing that. If you do wish to keep this format of doing things, I would highly recommend combining both your formats as the older ones do have an edge in some ways.

Also I think, the way you would write on your videos and point out the appropriate parts while explaining, was rather powerful. Visual impressions are immense and are a great influence in remembering things.

Hope you find my suggestions useful.

By the way, this is my first time ever writing online ever.

I genuinely love your work and think you are doing a great job. There is so much I have learnt from your videos.

    Cheers!

  17. Hi Tanushree,

Great point. I do plan on using that format in the future. However, for this video, I wasn’t really going into any mechanisms. It was more of an introductory video to introduce the topics of the types of cellular adaptations.

As I get into more detailed mechanisms, the videos will also have to be more detailed.

But thank you so much for your feedback. It’s great to hear other people’s input. It really helps!

  18. LOVE IT, IT IS SOO MUCH EASY N FUN WHEN SOMEONE LIKE YOU THAT LOVE TO TEACH MAKE IT SO INTERESTING. THANKS SOOOO MUCH. BLESS MY FRIEND.

  19. thank u so much can you make some videos about the urinary system + Immune, Blood
    And Lymphatic
    system 🙂

  20. i really wish that u would make videos about structural anatomy of head and neck ??? its really aweful to study from books =(

  21. Hi Leslie,
Thank you for doing these videos. I was lost in A&P trying to understand the Action Potential and decided to search Youtube and just pumped into your videos. It makes so much more sense to me now. Do you have any video on Graded Potential, or the Skeleton system?
Thanks again and keep up the good work.

  22. hi Leslie, your content is very detailed and interesting. I do not hesitate to forward your website to my readers. They can really benefit from all this good value you give. By the way, I like your new site look.
